An economic and touristic development project for Italy’s ancient beech forests
The Department of Economics, Engineering, Society, and Business (DEIM) at the University of Tuscia is collaborating on the project for the Development of a Management Plan for the Italian components of the UNESCO World Heritage Serial Site No. 1133TER, ‘Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe,’ funded by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities (MIBAC).
A significant part of the Management Plan is dedicated to, in agreement with European partners, developing, among other things, the economic enhancement of the sites, in harmony with the conservation of the ancient beech forests, and the sustainability of tourist flows. The project aims to identify economic development pathways that are compatible with sustainable land management in line with ecological transition.
To this end, a research questionnaire has been prepared to understand the ways in which protected areas that preserve the beech forests designated as UNESCO Heritage Sites are being used for tourism. Visitor opinions will be important not only to ensure the continuous improvement of services and provide a more effective response to visitor needs but also to make a valuable contribution to the economic development of the region, capable of generating well-being for the community, while being environmentally compatible and maintaining the ecological integrity of the UNESCO World Heritage.
